In the United States, not all varieties of flowers can grow anywhere. There are specific climates and conditions that flower need to bloom. Different categories, called zones, are assigned in each state. Knowing which flowers grow best in each zone will help you choose the flowers that are likely to thrive in your NJ garden. New Jersey belongs to zones 6A, 6B, 7A, and 7B. All the yellow flowers below can blossom in any of these zones.
The Marigold
Marigold is an annual flower that is very popular because of its brightness. It blooms all summer and makes your garden look lovely. Their heads are similar to carnation, and they have very thick petals that have a ruffled look.
A marigold needs well-drained soil and requires full sunlight to thrive. It is not advisable to keep it under a shade. This flower can pretty much grow in any soil but keep in mind that it needs a lot of sunshine. Water them from the base because the roots need the nutrients more than the flower itself. Allow the soil to dry before you water the flower again.
The Rose
The rose has a lot of varieties, and a yellow rose is not an uncommon sight in New Jersey. This flower has gone through hundreds of years of cultivation and today, we know of about 2000 varieties of this flower. Old roses are more fragrant than the new varieties that were only introduced to the world after 1867.
Old roses are also known to be stronger in combating diseases than the new ones. However, they are difficult to bloom. New types of roses are genetically engineered to thrive all year round. Roses need moist but well-drained soil and full sunlight. For best results, plant them in places where they are exposed to the sun for at least five hours.
The Lilium
The Lilium is a very popular flower used for a variety of upcoming occasions. They are large and showy, and they exude a very aromatic fragrance. The petal is shaped with six trumpets on a long stem.
Just like the rose, the Lilium needs moist but well-drained soil, but it only needs partial sunlight. Besides yellow, they come in a rainbow of fabulous hues.
The Hibiscus
Also called hibiscus rosa-sinensis, this is a kind of flower that grows on a tree. When they bloom, they are huge and they have very leafy dark green leaves. They have trumpet-shaped blooms like the Lilium. Hibiscus needs moist and well-drained soil and partial sunlight. They also need partial shade. It is a tropical flower and requires extra care because it is sensitive to cold and drought. During hot weather, make sure you protect them by keeping them hydrated.
The Sunflower
A most common flower indeed, the helianthus or sunflower is a daisy-like flower that will provide you seeds when ripe. They are very popular and often seen on floral arrangements in any occasion during the fall. They need well-drained soil, and like marigold, this flower needs full sunlight. What’s good is that this flower is tough and requires little care. However, do not over fertilize as they may break apart.
The Chrysanthemum
Often called the mums, it is a classic flower in any person’s garden. This flower has hundreds of varieties and colors to choose from, including shades of yellow. They grow to different sizes and height. The variations also bloom at various times of the year. It needs the full sun and a well-drained soil. One great technique to grow this is to remove the main stem to force the plant to grow two stems.
